Portable Starlink dishes have been installed in Bangalow, Federal, Goonengerry, Mullumbimby, South Golden Beach, Upper Coopers Creek and Wilsons Creek, Byron Shire Council staff say.
The backup infrastructure is to ensure people have access to essential and life-saving communications when mobile and NBN networks fail.
The Starlink systems and associated equipment are on loan for free for two years thanks to funding from state and federal governments.
How to
Participate
Inspired by, but not limited to, the model developed by the Red Cross, our concept of Community-led Resilience Teams is to find pathways to identify, support and enhance pre-existing capacities within our community to become more capable of dealing with challenges as they arise.
One of the most well researched aspects of resilience in any part of the world is the capacity for community connectivity. With this in mind, we are remapping the “Street Coordinator” model from the Red Cross playbook as “Area Contacts” as a way to enhance local network capacity.
We understand that our community already has a highly developed network and resilience capacity, which we aim to build on, support and strengthen.

UHF Radio Repeater Location Test
Funding was given for us to host and facilitate a test for locating a Repeater Tower to see where it would and (importantly) wouldn’t reach.
This was well attended by our team of Area Contacts who drove around their respective areas testing various locations and marking Clear / Scratchy / Blackspot on a worksheet.
These locations were also mapped using What3Words, which is an ingenious location system that is worth knowing about (see the link here for the repeater test location).
A grant is being sought to then pay for and install this repeater and also provide dedicated handsets to our Area Contacts for improved resilience communications.
